Born in 1936 in Rostock. Father: lawyer and notary, Mother: skilled sports teacher and housewife. Grew up in Bützow and Neustrelitz. Fled to Schwerin in 1945. Moved from Schwerin to Lübeck in 1946 to paternal relatives. Degree in economy with Doctorate in politics.
