The sale of James Bond’s Aston Martin
Translated by Kaylee Hultgren. See the original article in Italian
Vintage English cars are above the financial crisis and are achieving record prices. But the Aston Martin 007, the car used in the filming of James Bond, equipped with its essential gadgets -does it have a price? Yes -when the proud possessor decided to put this unique treasure up for sale, instead of giving it to a museum, where it ought to be. But what is the price of a myth?
If you could get an advance of around 4,000,000 pounds sterling, and are passionate fans of the most famous agent in the world, your moment has arrived.
Mr. Jerry Lee has in fact decided to put the Aston Martin DB5 that 007 used in Goldfinger and Thunderball in order to get together a bit of money for a series of humanitarian initiatives.
How is it that Mr. Lee is in possession of this vehicle?
Well… he acquired it in 1969 for 12,000 dollars and ever since has regularly used it, collecting the discrete amount of 30,000 miles… but that really seems rather conservative.
The curious thing is that the car is bursting with knick-knacks regularly used by James Bond, all of which (or almost all) seem to work.
The only counter-indication: in the purchasing contract it’s specified that every time that the Aston Martin (the firm, not the car) needed the Aston Martin (the car, not the firm) for professional purposes, you’re required to lend it to the manufacturer. A small sacrifice to possess a piece of cinematic history.

Correction: Although the original understanding from 1969 was that Mr. Lee would let the car be exhibited by Aston Martin, the offer was withdrawn after a minor incident of vandalism in the mid-70s. There was never any contractual commitment for this, and in any event, there are no such obligations tied to the sale of the car today. That said, Mr. Lee just allowed the car to be displayed by Aston Martin at their dealership on Park Lane, London, last week.
